Favicon Generator
Turn one image into a complete favicon set with the HTML to match.
Upload one square image and get the complete favicon set as a zip — a
multi-size favicon.ico, an Apple touch icon, the PNGs a web manifest
needs, and the manifest itself — plus the exact HTML to paste into your
<head>.
Five files, not thirty. Most of what older generators emit targets browsers that no longer exist.
How it works
A favicon is not one file, because the places it appears have genuinely different requirements. The browser tab needs something legible at 16 pixels. A pinned taskbar shortcut wants 48. An iOS home screen uses 180 and — importantly — applies its own rounded corners, so a transparent background comes out looking wrong there. Android's install prompt reads 192 and 512 from the web manifest.
favicon.ico still earns its place for one unglamorous reason:
browsers request /favicon.ico from the site root whether or not
the page mentions it. Having one prevents a 404 on every first visit. The ICO
here contains 16, 32 and 48 pixel versions in a single file, which is the format's
one genuinely good idea — the browser picks whichever size it needs.
Design matters more than tooling at these sizes. A 16-pixel square holds roughly one letter or one simple shape. A detailed logo scaled down becomes an indistinct smudge, so the usual answer is a cropped monogram or mark rather than the full lockup. Test it at actual size before committing — what looks fine in a 512-pixel preview frequently does not survive the tab.
If you have an SVG, supply that too. Modern browsers accept
rel="icon" type="image/svg+xml" and will render it crisply at any
size, including on high-density displays where a 32-pixel PNG looks soft. It also
supports prefers-color-scheme inside the SVG, which is how sites get
a favicon that adapts to dark mode. Keep the ICO alongside it as the fallback.
One caution about caching: browsers cache favicons aggressively and often ignore a normal reload. After replacing one, expect to see the old icon for a while. Adding a query string to the link tag, or a hard refresh, is usually needed to confirm the new one is live.
Frequently asked questions
What size should my source image be?
At least 512 × 512 and square. Everything is scaled down from it, and downscaling is far kinder than upscaling. A non-square image is padded to a square rather than distorted, so crop it to square first if the framing matters.
Do I still need favicon.ico?
Yes, for one practical reason: browsers request /favicon.ico from the site root regardless of what your HTML says. Without one you take a 404 on essentially every first visit. It also remains the most widely understood format.
Where do the files go?
In your site root, alongside index.html — favicon.ico especially, since that is where browsers look for it unprompted. Then paste the supplied link tags into your <head>. The manifest expects the icons at the paths shown in it.
Why has my favicon not changed?
Browsers cache favicons far more aggressively than other assets and frequently ignore an ordinary reload. Try a hard refresh, a private window, or appending a version query string to the link tag. It is almost always caching rather than a broken file.
Should I use an SVG favicon?
As an addition, not a replacement. Modern browsers render an SVG icon crisply at any resolution and it can adapt to dark mode via prefers-color-scheme. Keep favicon.ico as the fallback for everything that does not support it.
My logo is unreadable at 16 pixels. What should I do?
Use a different mark for the icon. Sixteen pixels holds about one letter or one simple shape, so most brands use an initial or a symbol from their logo rather than the full lockup. Check it at actual size in a real tab, not in a preview.
