Meta Tag Generator

Generate title, description, canonical, Open Graph and Twitter tags.

Fill in the details and get the complete <head> block: the SEO basics, the canonical and robots directives, and the Open Graph and Twitter Card tags that decide how your link looks when someone shares it.

Title and description lengths are checked as they are generated, so you find out here rather than from a truncated result in Google.

How it works

Only a handful of meta tags still matter. The title is the single strongest on-page signal and the headline of your search result. Google truncates around 580 pixels, which is roughly 60 characters; aim to get the important words in first, because a truncated tail is a wasted tail. The meta description is not a ranking factor at all, but it is the sales copy under the headline and it drives click-through. Around 155–160 characters survives on desktop.

The canonical tag tells search engines which URL is the real one when the same content is reachable several ways — with and without www, with tracking parameters, over http and https. Without it, those variants compete with each other and split whatever authority the page has. Always make it absolute, and make sure it points at a URL that actually returns 200.

Open Graph tags control the preview card on Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Slack and most messaging apps. The image is the part that matters most: use 1200×630, host it on the same domain over HTTPS, and give the URL absolutely rather than relatively — a relative og:image is the most common reason a share preview comes out blank. Twitter Card tags are a parallel set for X; where a Twitter tag is missing, it falls back to the Open Graph equivalent, so the only ones genuinely worth adding are twitter:card and, if you have them, the account handles.

Two tags to leave out. meta keywords has been ignored by Google since 2009 and does nothing but advertise your keyword list to competitors. And do not add robots with index, follow "to be safe" — indexing is the default, so the tag says nothing. The robots meta tag is worth writing only when you want noindex, nofollow, or a directive such as max-snippet.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a title tag be?

Under about 60 characters. Google measures pixels rather than characters — roughly 580 on desktop — so a title of wide capitals truncates sooner than one of narrow lowercase. Front-load the terms that matter in case the tail is cut.

Does the meta description affect rankings?

No, and it has not for many years. It affects click-through rate, which is worth just as much in practice. Note that Google frequently rewrites it using text from the page when it judges its own extract a better answer to the query.

Do I still need meta keywords?

No. Google has ignored it since 2009 and the other major engines followed. The only effect of including it is to publish your keyword research to anyone who views source. Leave it out.

What size should the Open Graph image be?

1200×630 pixels, a 1.91:1 ratio, under about 5 MB. Give the URL in absolute form with https — a relative path is the usual cause of a blank share preview — and keep important detail away from the edges, since some platforms crop to a square.

Do I need Twitter Card tags as well as Open Graph?

Barely. X falls back to the Open Graph tags for title, description and image, so all you really need is twitter:card set to summary_large_image, plus the site and creator handles if you want the attribution line.

Where does the canonical tag point for paginated pages?

Each page should be self-canonical — page two canonicals to page two. Pointing every page at page one used to be common advice and simply hides pages two onward from the index. Use rel=prev/next semantics through your navigation instead.
