Image Format Converter

Convert between WebP, JPEG, PNG, GIF and BMP in the browser.

JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP or BMP, up to 20 MB. The file type is read from the contents, not the name.

WebP is smallest and keeps transparency. JPEG suits photographs but has no transparency. PNG is lossless.

Convert an image between WebP, JPEG, PNG, GIF and BMP, and see exactly how much smaller — or larger — the result is.

Your file is decoded, re-encoded and handed back. Nothing from the original survives except the pixels, so EXIF and GPS data are gone. Uploads and results are deleted after fifteen minutes.

How it works

Choosing a format is really choosing what you are willing to lose. JPEG throws away detail your eye is bad at noticing and is superb at photographs; it is poor at sharp edges, which is why screenshots and logos go blotchy in it, and it has no transparency at all. PNG is lossless and keeps an alpha channel, which makes it right for logos, screenshots and anything with flat colour — and wrong for photographs, where it is often several times the size of an equivalent JPEG.

WebP is the one to reach for by default now. It does both: lossy compression that beats JPEG by roughly 25–35% at matched quality, and a lossless mode with transparency that beats PNG. Every current browser supports it, and has since 2020. The practical reasons not to use it are old software and email clients, not browsers.

GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame and survives only for animation; for a still image it is worse than PNG in every respect. BMP is uncompressed and exists here for the rare tool that demands it.

Two things are worth knowing about what conversion costs. First, lossy to lossy is destructive: a JPEG converted to WebP is compressed a second time, over artefacts the first pass already introduced. Convert from the original wherever you still have it. Second, going from a transparent PNG to JPEG has to put something behind the transparent pixels — white, here. That is not reversible, and it is why a logo converted to JPEG can never be dropped onto a coloured background again.

Every conversion here also strips metadata, because re-encoding from a pixel buffer cannot carry it. Usually that is what you want: camera photos routinely embed GPS coordinates, and uploading one to a public site publishes where it was taken. If you need the EXIF kept, this is the wrong tool.

Frequently asked questions

Which format should I use on a website?

WebP for almost everything — smaller than JPEG at the same quality, and it keeps transparency like PNG. Serve it with a <picture> element falling back to JPEG or PNG if you still support very old clients, though in practice browser support has been universal since 2020.

Does converting reduce quality?

It depends on the direction. Anything to PNG or BMP is lossless. Anything to JPEG or WebP is lossy, and converting an already-lossy file compresses artefacts on top of artefacts. Work from the original whenever you still have it.

What happens to transparency when I convert to JPEG?

JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparent pixels are composited onto white. This is not reversible — the transparency is gone, not hidden. Convert to PNG or WebP instead if you need it kept.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

Yes, conversion happens in PHP. The file is decoded to pixels, re-encoded and deleted along with the result after fifteen minutes. Nothing is logged and nothing is retained. If an image is confidential enough that this matters, convert it locally.

Is EXIF and GPS data removed?

Yes, unavoidably. Re-encoding writes from a pixel buffer, so metadata cannot come along. That is a deliberate privacy default — a phone photo typically carries the coordinates where it was taken.

Why is my converted PNG bigger than the JPEG I started with?

Because PNG is lossless. It has to store every pixel the JPEG approximated, artefacts included, and a photograph has far too much variation to compress losslessly. For photographs, convert to WebP or stay with JPEG.
