Calculating the exact length of a text document requires more than just counting the number of letters. This tool utilizes robust regular expressions and PHP's native multibyte string functions (mb_strlen) to accurately parse modern UTF-8 text, including emojis and foreign language characters that would otherwise break older counters.
Word Counting: Words are determined by splitting the text by spaces, tabs, and newlines, while safely ignoring punctuation marks so that hyphenated words are handled correctly.
Sentences & Paragraphs: Sentences are calculated by looking for standard terminal punctuation marks (periods, exclamation points, and question marks) followed by a space. Paragraphs are identified by scanning for double line breaks, which is the standard typographical indicator of a new block of text.
Reading Time: The estimated reading time is calculated based on the universally accepted average adult reading speed of 225 words per minute. Speaking time (for speeches or presentations) is estimated at a slightly slower pace of 130 words per minute.
