HTML Encode / Decode

Safely escape HTML entities or decode them back to raw characters.

Paste your text into the box to instantly escape dangerous HTML characters (like < and >) into their safe HTML entity equivalents. This process is absolutely critical for web security, specifically for preventing cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities and layout breaks when displaying user-generated content.

Alternatively, you can paste previously encoded HTML entities to revert them back to highly readable, raw text. This tool runs entirely on our secure server, properly supporting modern UTF-8 Unicode text. Absolutely nothing you paste here is logged, saved to a database, or transmitted to any third-party analytics services.

How it works

The core rendering engines of web browsers rely on specific reserve characters—such as angle brackets (< >), ampersands (&), and quotes (" ')—to define the structure, tags, and attributes of a document. If you need to safely display programming code or unfiltered user input on a web page, you must encode these reserved characters into "entities" (like &lt;). This signals to the browser that it should simply display the character as visual text rather than attempting to execute it as markup.

Encode mode: This mode seamlessly converts applicable characters to HTML entities utilizing PHP's rock-solid htmlspecialchars() engine with the ENT_QUOTES flag enabled. This guarantees that single quotes, double quotes, ampersands, and both angle brackets are all safely neutralized for use inside HTML bodies or attribute values.

Decode mode: Reverses the encoding process. It systematically converts entities like &amp; or numeric character references like &#39; back into their original raw characters using html_entity_decode(). It fully supports HTML5 entities, ensuring modern emojis and symbols are properly restored.

Frequently asked questions

Is this safe to use for preventing XSS attacks?

Yes. The encoder explicitly escapes single quotes, double quotes, ampersands, and angle brackets. This covers the industry-standard requirements for safely echoing arbitrary user input into a standard HTML body context or within quoted HTML attributes.

Why does decoding sometimes not look right?

If the input was accidentally encoded multiple times (e.g. <code>&amp;amp;lt;</code>), decoding it once will only peel back one layer of the encoding. You might need to run the decode mode multiple times consecutively to reach the original raw text.

Does this tool encode every single Unicode character?

No. It only encodes the specific reserved characters that have special meaning in HTML syntax (quotes, ampersands, angle brackets). It deliberately preserves standard UTF-8 text (like foreign language characters or emojis) so your text remains efficient and highly readable.

Is my sensitive text stored anywhere?

Absolutely not. All processing happens entirely in volatile memory during the brief lifecycle of your request and is discarded immediately after the result is returned to your browser. We do not keep logs of your inputs.

What is the maximum text size I can process?

You can process up to 1 MB of text at a single time. If you have an enormous database dump that requires escaping, we recommend using a command-line script rather than a browser-based utility.
