Open Graph Checker

See how a link will look when shared on social media and chat apps.

Enter a URL to see the Open Graph and Twitter Card tags a page publishes, and what a shared link will therefore look like on Facebook, LinkedIn, X, WhatsApp, Slack and everywhere else that renders link previews.

Missing tags are the reason shared links so often appear as a bare URL with no image — and because you rarely see your own links as others do, it usually goes unnoticed for a long time.

How it works

When a link is pasted into a social network or chat app, that platform fetches the page and looks for Open Graph tags — meta elements with a property attribute beginning og:. From those it builds the preview card. If they are absent it guesses from page content, and the result is usually poor or empty.

Four tags do nearly all the work:

  • og:title — the card headline. Can differ from the page title, and often should: search wants keywords, a social card wants a hook.
  • og:description — a sentence or two beneath it.
  • og:image — the single most important one. A card with an image occupies far more space in a feed and is dramatically more clickable. Use an absolute URL; relative paths fail on most platforms.
  • og:url — the canonical URL for the content, so shares of parameterised variants consolidate.

Recommended image size is 1200 × 630 (1.91:1). Smaller than 600 × 315 and platforms fall back to a small thumbnail. Keep it under about 5 MB, and remember many platforms will not fetch an image behind authentication or a bot-blocking rule.

Twitter Card tags (twitter:) are largely redundant now — X falls back to Open Graph for title, description and image. The one worth setting is twitter:card, choosing between a small thumbnail and the large summary_large_image layout.

A practical note: platforms cache aggressively. After fixing tags, a previously shared link may keep showing the old preview for days. Facebook's Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn's Post Inspector both let you force a refresh.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my shared link show no image?

Usually og:image is missing, uses a relative path instead of an absolute URL, is too small, or sits behind something that blocks the platform's crawler. Absolute URL, at least 600 x 315, and publicly fetchable.

What size should the og:image be?

1200 x 630 pixels, a 1.91:1 ratio. That renders as a large card everywhere. Below 600 x 315 most platforms drop to a small square thumbnail, which is far less effective.

I fixed my tags but the old preview still shows. Why?

Platforms cache scraped metadata, sometimes for days. Use Facebook's Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn's Post Inspector to force a re-scrape. WhatsApp and Slack generally expire on their own.

Do I need Twitter Card tags as well as Open Graph?

Mostly no. X falls back to Open Graph for title, description and image. The one worth adding is twitter:card set to summary_large_image, which selects the large layout rather than the small thumbnail.

Should og:title match my page title?

Not necessarily. A page title is written for search results and often carries brand suffixes; a social card wants something that reads well in a feed. Different text for each is a legitimate choice.

My tags are added by JavaScript. Is that a problem?

Yes. Social crawlers do not execute JavaScript — they read the raw HTML response and nothing else. Tags injected client-side are invisible to every platform, which is why this tool reads the raw response too.
