EXIF & Photo Metadata Viewer
Extract hidden camera metadata, GPS locations, and dates from images.
Upload a photograph (JPG, JPEG, or TIFF) to instantly extract its hidden EXIF metadata. Almost all modern digital cameras and smartphones silently embed a massive amount of invisible technical data into every single photo you take.
This hidden data includes the exact make and model of the camera, the precise exposure settings used (Aperture, ISO, Shutter Speed), the exact time the shutter was pressed, and often the exact GPS coordinates of where you were standing.
How it works
What is EXIF? Exchangeable Image File Format (EXIF) is a standard that specifies the formats for images and sound tags used by digital cameras. It is embedded directly into the binary header of the image file.
The Extraction Process: When you upload an image, our tool utilizes PHP's native EXIF extension to safely parse the binary header of the file without ever modifying it. We read the raw byte arrays and translate the manufacturer-specific codes into human-readable text (e.g., converting an exposure time of 1/250 from raw rational numbers).
Security Warning: Because EXIF data frequently contains highly accurate GPS coordinates, you should never upload raw photos directly from your phone to public social media or forums without stripping the metadata first. If you do, anyone can download your photo and see exactly where you live.
100% Private: Your uploaded photo is processed securely in RAM and immediately destroyed. We do not store, save, or log your images or their extracted GPS data.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my photo not have any EXIF data?
If you downloaded the photo from Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or WhatsApp, the EXIF data was automatically stripped by their servers during compression to protect your privacy. Only original, unedited photos directly from a camera or phone will retain their metadata.
Does this work on PNG or WebP images?
No. The EXIF standard is strictly designed for JPEG/JPG and TIFF image formats. While it is technically possible to embed metadata in PNGs using different standards (like XMP), it is extremely rare and not supported by this standard EXIF parser.
How accurate is the GPS location?
If your smartphone's location services were enabled when you took the photo, the embedded GPS coordinates are accurate to within a few meters. You can literally copy the coordinates from this tool into Google Maps to see the exact location.
How can I remove this data?
You can use our EXIF Metadata Remover tool to safely strip all hidden data from your photos before sharing them online, or you can use standard image editing software (like Photoshop's "Export As" feature) which usually drops metadata by default.
