Domain Availability Checker
Check whether a domain is available, across several TLDs at once.
Enter a domain name to see whether it is available to register. If you type a bare name without an extension, several popular TLDs are checked at once so you can compare in a single step.
Results come from the registry itself over RDAP, which is the accurate way to ask. A domain that fails to load in a browser may still be registered, and a domain with no website may be very much taken.
How it works
The only reliable way to know whether a domain is available is to ask the registry that runs its TLD. This tool queries RDAP, the registries' own structured lookup service — the same source a registrar consults.
A DNS lookup cannot answer this question. Plenty of registered domains have no DNS records at all: parked names, defensive registrations, domains held for a future project. If you check by pinging a name, every one of those looks "available" when it is not.
An unavailable result does not always mean someone is using it. Domains fall into several states worth distinguishing:
- Registered and active — owned, and possibly for sale. The WHOIS lookup will show the registrar and expiry date.
- Expired, in redemption — the previous owner can still recover it for around 30 days, usually at a fee. Not yet available.
- Pending delete — recovery has lapsed. It will be released for registration within a few days, though desirable names are usually caught instantly by drop-catching services.
- Reserved or premium — some names are held back by the registry, or priced far above standard. These may appear available here but cost considerably more at checkout.
A caveat on coverage: RDAP is mandatory for gTLDs such as .com, .net, .org and the newer extensions, but adoption varies among country-code TLDs. Where a registry publishes no RDAP service, this tool reports that it cannot determine availability rather than guessing.
Frequently asked questions
Does checking a domain here put it at risk of being taken?
No. This is a read-only registry query and generates no notification to anyone. The idea that searching a domain causes it to be registered out from under you — "domain front running" — relates to some search tools historically leaking queries; a plain RDAP lookup does not.
Why does a domain show as unavailable when the website does not load?
Registration and DNS are separate. A domain can be registered with no DNS records, no website and no mail, and it is still owned. Only the registry knows, which is why this checks RDAP rather than trying to resolve the name.
A domain shows as available but my registrar says it is not. Why?
Usually a premium or registry-reserved name, or one in the brief window between pendingDelete and release. Registrars also apply their own reserved lists. The registry answer here is accurate about registration status, not about what any particular registrar will sell you.
Can I check a domain that recently expired?
Yes, and the status matters. redemptionPeriod means the previous owner can still recover it. pendingDelete means it will be released shortly — though popular names are usually captured within seconds by automated drop-catchers.
Why can some country-code domains not be checked?
Not every ccTLD registry publishes RDAP. Where none exists we say so rather than guess. Check with that registry or a registrar directly for those extensions.
How many TLDs are checked at once?
Up to nine when you enter a bare name, covering the most common extensions. Enter a full domain including its extension to check just that one.
