DNS Zone File Generator
Generate a standard BIND-compatible DNS zone file from scratch.
Use this tool to rapidly generate a properly formatted, standards-compliant DNS zone file for your domain name. It outputs a raw text file in the strict RFC 1035 BIND format, which is the industry standard format understood by almost every major DNS server software (including BIND9, PowerDNS, and NSD) and heavily utilized by massive web hosts.
This generator is perfect for system administrators provisioning new authoritative nameservers, or for migrating large numbers of DNS records between different hosting providers that require a raw zone file import.
How it works
A DNS Zone File is a plain-text document that contains the authoritative mapping of all DNS records for a single domain name (the "zone"). Managing these files manually can be tedious and highly error-prone because a single misplaced period or incorrectly formatted SOA (Start of Authority) record can break your entire website.
The SOA Record: This tool automatically builds a mathematically correct SOA record, which acts as the header of the zone file. It generates a standardized serial number based on today's date (format YYYYMMDD01), which is critical for telling secondary nameservers that the file has been updated and they need to pull the latest changes.
Formatting Strictness: The BIND format is incredibly strict about syntax, specifically regarding trailing dots. If you create a CNAME pointing to example.com without a trailing dot (example.com.), the DNS server assumes it is a relative path and will erroneously append your domain to it again (resulting in example.com.yourdomain.com). This generator automatically handles all absolute path formatting and spacing to guarantee your file compiles without syntax errors.
Frequently asked questions
What is a BIND Zone File?
BIND (Berkeley Internet Name Domain) is the most widely used DNS server software on the internet. Its specific plain-text format for defining DNS records (originally defined in RFC 1035) became the de facto standard. Almost all modern DNS providers allow you to import and export records using the BIND zone file format.
What does the Serial Number do?
The serial number in the SOA record tells slave/secondary DNS servers when the zone has changed. If the serial number increases, the secondary servers know they must download a fresh copy of the records. It is a standard convention to format the serial as YYYYMMDDNN.
Why are there `@` symbols in the output?
In a BIND zone file, the `@` symbol is a shortcut variable that represents the origin domain name of the zone (e.g., your bare domain `example.com`). It prevents you from having to type the full domain name repeatedly on every single line.
Can I import this file into Cloudflare or AWS Route 53?
Yes. Both Cloudflare and Amazon Route 53 (along with cPanel, DigitalOcean, and Google Cloud DNS) fully support importing standard BIND zone files. You can copy the output from this tool and paste it directly into their bulk import wizards.
Is this data stored anywhere?
No. Your IP addresses and domain configurations are processed entirely in memory on our servers to generate the text file, and they are discarded immediately after. We do not store your infrastructure data.
